From Day To Night

Betts is a reinvention of the restaurant that serves as a front door to a historic landmark building.  The former tavern that occupied the space was primarily focused on dinner service with a rather dark and monotone interior.  A new dining concept was launched that includes breakfast and lunch service, requiring a space that is inviting and comfortable from morning to evening.

The entire public space of the restaurant was renovated.  Guests enter from the building’s lobby into what is now an open and light-filled space.  The perimeter of the main dining hall has several different service functions along it.  A unified look was achieved through a pattern of wood battens and moldings overlaid on creamy white walls.  A continuous horizontal band along the top of these walls culminates at the bar back where it becomes a stacked pattern of alternating boards between three mirrored arches.  Reflective surfaces lighten the mass of the central columns.  Matte white and gloss black penny tile create a feature wall at the espresso station.  The tilework along with antique brass fittings in the accent lighting and hardware are a nod to the history of the building.  A relaxing yet lively blue is featured in the bar front, booth upholstery, and pendant lighting.  A built-in walnut “island” provides high-top banquette and booth seating.  Telescoping wall panels allow the reconfigurable private dining room to be opened to the dining hall or closed for private parties.  When closed, the translucent wall panels provide a backdrop to the dining hall with a lantern-like glow.  This room sets a contrasting tone to the main space while retaining its inviting personality including a custom foil wallcovering.  The revitalized restaurant includes a variety of seating types with views across the dining hall and out to the street.
