The mission of the Geauga Park District is to preserve, conserve, and protect the natural features of the county and to provide outdoor recreational experiences to its residents of every age and ability at all times of the year. To support this mission, a series of operation centers are strategically located throughout its twenty-eight parks serving various regions. A key goal of the Park District’s master plan has been to consolidate its West operations into one facility including a maintenance shop and office functions.
Working closely with the Park District’s planning staff, a scheme was developed for a new building within The Rookery Park. A clear field adjacent to its entry was identified as an ideal location for access while not imposing on the existing lodge, trails, and recreational areas. The new structure’s simple form and material palette are respectful of its utilitarian function and natural surroundings. The efficient plan is divided between the office and shop functions. This is articulated through the roofline which starts as a gable over the office and extends out over the shop front forming a series of clerestory windows. These windows provide ample natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting within the workspace. The exterior cedar cladding is a familiar material used throughout the Park District’s buildings. A translucent stain is applied to the cladding and paired with matte black metal roofing to form a neutral palette against the tree line beyond. A covered entry is carved into the building’s rectangular footprint as both a practical feature and welcoming gesture.
