Perched above a scenic river valley, the composition of the house is informed by the sweeping vista of the surrounding terrain and landscape. A private lane with an allée of trees ascends one hundred feet up the hillside from the valley below and forms a switchback that gradually reveals the structure above. Upon arriving at the hilltop, a looped motor court leads to a tangent entry veranda greeting guests. A long horizontal brick wall provides a backdrop to the arrival sequence while screening the garage from view. The veranda leads in to a reception hall oriented on axis with the site’s oldest and most unique tree as a focal point. The L-shaped plan arranges the kitchen at its intersection with other social and family living spaces adjacent to it. Both wings of the house terminate with bedrooms, including guest and owner suites at opposite ends. Providing a spatial transition between the social and private areas, double-sided glass connectors also serve as locations for vertical circulation at each wing. Framed by a brick landscape wall, the pool and its deck are positioned as a fourth corner of the house, reinforcing the strong connection of indoors and outdoors. A wide opening between the pool and a four-season room with a hibachi kitchen provides a venue for casual gatherings of family and friends. Gateways in the landscape wall provide aligned connections to a trailhead that follows the natural ridge of the property overlooking both the valley and a steep ravine carved by an active stream below.
The material palette is continuous from the exterior to interior and is carefully considered for simplicity, beauty, and endurance. The contrast and balance of textured solid and sleek void is achieved by pairing a regionally produced sand formed brick with a high-performance glazed curtain wall system. Deep overhangs and canopies are lined with the rich tones of thermally treated poplar which continues to parts of the interior ceilings. A rhythm of linear brick walls defines spaces as they run from outside to inside. A combination of honed and polished black granite floors begins beneath the entry and pool canopies and continues in and throughout the house. Paired with carefully selected artworks, the extensive views will provide an ever-evolving color palette with the change of seasons.
